How Able Farms Began (2023)

Able Farms was founded in 2023, but the roots of the farm started earlier. The first “seed money” came from selling my pigs at the county fair and from selling seedlings and produce I grew in my grandma’s basement. Those small beginnings turned into the foundation of the farm we have today

First Animals On The Farm

We started with eight Cross gilts that I acquired from the farm where I’d been working. Along with the pigs, I rented the original 13 acres — a small setup with a barn, a few acres of pasture, and some woods. It wasn’t much, but it felt like the start of something real.

The Unexpected Surprise

Soon after settling in, we noticed one of the gilts acting differently. She started showing signs that she was farther along than the others we had recently introduced to the boars. That’s when we realized she might have already been pregnant when we bought her.

The Day Big Momma Had Her Babies

I’ll never forget that day. I was sitting in class — still a junior in high school — when my dad called and said, “There are piglets outside, and I don’t know what to do!” I rushed home, and sure enough, Big Momma had given birth. If I remember right, she had eight piglets, though only three made it. That moment changed everything and marked the first true milestone of Able Farms.

Growing From the Ground Up

Those early surprises and challenges shaped who we are. Able Farms has grown since then, but our values remain the same: honest work, healthy animals, and food you can trust. What began with one unexpected litter has turned into a full-scale operation — we now farrow throughout the year and raise a few hundred pigs annually. Alongside the pigs, we also raise chickens and keep bees, adding fresh eggs and honey to what we provide our community. Every season brings new growth, and every year we’re proud to continue building Able Farms from the ground up.
